DENVER, CO - December 7, 2007 - The Fort Lewis College women's basketball team defeated the hosting Metro State Roadrunners 68-51 Friday night in their 2007-08 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) season opener. The Skyhawks improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the RMAC, while the Roadrunners fall to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
Behind a season best, 20 points from Laura Haugen (Fort Collins, CO/Poudre) on 9-of-11 from the field, including 2 three pointers. Erin Kerr (Buckeye, AZ/Buckeye Union) added 16 points on the night, going 4-for-5 from downtown and 6-of-9 from the field. Allison Rosel (Colorado Springs, CO/Doherty) was the final Skyhawk in double-figures with 11 points. The sophomore added a team-high eight rebounds. Katie Mackey (Eaton, CO/Eaton) also knabbed eight rebounds and a team-high four steals.
The Skyhawks went on a 9-2 opening run to start the game, but the Roadrunners rebounded and went back and forth to remainder of the first half. Their were eight tie scores in the first half alone.
The second half the Skyhawks came out red hot out-scoring the Roadrunners 20 to six in the first 10 minutes of the half grabbing a 53-35 lead with 9:33 left in the game. The Skyhawks cruised the final nine minutes, leading by as many as 19 with 1:32 left in regulation.
The Skyhawks scored 21 points off turnovers, 32 points in the paint and 14 fast break points. They out-rebounded the Roadrunners by 10 (37-27).
